Capsule Endoscopy

This treatment is often recommended for patients with unexplained iron deficiency to determine if there is any bleeding in the small intestine. Capsule Endoscopy is a day procedure that does not require any sedation or anaesthetic.

The test involves swallowing a capsule that takes multiple digital images of the small intestine.

The capsule (about the size of a large vitamin) travels through the small intestine (6 metres long!) for around 8 hours, transmitting the data to a recorder that is placed around your waist. You should not notice the capsule passing through your system and you will not need to retrieve this device.
